OMG! You Have To Go To Detroit! The Most Underrated City Ever!
Hey bestie! Stop everything you are doing right now. I just read the coolest news and I had to tell you first. Travel + Leisure just named Detroit the most underrated city in the whole Midwest! I have been telling you for years that Detroit is the place to be, and finally, everyone else is catching up. You need to pack your bags because we are planning your trip right now. I am not kidding, this city is so much fun and it is way cheaper than places like Chicago or New York.
Detroit has this amazing vibe that you just can’t find anywhere else. It is tough, it is pretty, it is artsy, and the food? Oh my gosh, the food is to die for! I put together this huge guide for you so you don’t miss a single thing. We are talking about 15+ spots that you absolutely have to visit. Let’s get into it!
The Best Places to Eat (Get Ready to be Full!)
1. Lafayette Coney Island: You cannot go to Detroit and not get a Coney dog. It is a hot dog with beanless chili, mustard, and onions. Go to Lafayette Coney Island. It looks like an old-school diner because it is! Order “two with everything” and a plate of fries. It will cost you about $12. Photo tip: Stand outside under the big yellow neon sign at night. It looks so cool and retro!
2. Buddy’s Pizza: This isn’t your normal round pizza. Detroit-style pizza is square and has a thick, crunchy crust. The cheese goes all the way to the edge and gets burnt and crispy. It is heaven! You have to order the “Detroiter.” A small one is about $22. Make sure you take a photo of the “corner slice” before you eat it because that is the part everyone wants!
3. Sister Pie: This is a tiny little bakery that makes the best pies in the world. You have to try the Salted Maple pie. It sounds weird but it is so sweet and salty. Also, get a cookie with sea salt on top. Budget about $15 for a slice and a coffee. The shop is super cute and bright, so take a photo of your pie against their colorful counters.
4. Slows Bar B Q: If you like meat, this is your place. It is in a cool area called Corktown. Order the “Yardbird” sandwich. It is chicken with mushrooms and cheddar and bacon. It is huge! Budget about $20. The building is old and made of wood, so it feels very cozy.
5. Cliff Bell’s: This is an old jazz club. It looks like a movie set from the 1930s with red booths and dark wood. You go here for the music and a fancy drink. Order a classic cocktail like an Old Fashioned for $15. Sit near the stage to get a video of the band playing.
Must-See Sights and Photo Spots
6. The Belt: This is a tiny alleyway right downtown, but it is not a normal alley. It is filled with paintings on the walls and lights hanging over your head. It is the best place in the city for Instagram photos! Go to a bar there called The Skip and order a frozen drink for $14. Stand right in the middle of the alley and look up for the best shot.
7. Motown Museum (Hitsville U.S.A.): This is the house where Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder recorded their hits! You have to take a tour. It costs $20. You can stand in the actual studio where the magic happened. You aren’t allowed to take photos inside the studio, so take a picture outside in front of the “Hitsville U.S.A.” sign. It’s iconic!
8. Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA): This museum is giant. The coolest part is the “Detroit Industry Murals” by Diego Rivera. They cover four huge walls. Stand in the very center of the room and have someone take a picture of you looking small next to the giant art. Tickets are $15.
9. Eastern Market: Go here on a Saturday morning. It is a massive outdoor market with flowers, food, and music. It is so loud and happy! Buy a big bouquet of flowers for $10 and some fresh kettle corn for $5. Walk around and look at the murals on the sides of the big buildings.
10. The Heidelberg Project: This is an outdoor art spot on a street where someone turned old houses and shoes and clocks into art. It is very colorful and a little bit strange, but in a good way! It is free to walk around. Take a photo next to the house covered in polka dots.
11. Belle Isle Park: This is an island in the middle of the river. You have to see the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. It is a big glass building full of tropical plants. It is so warm inside! It costs $11 for a car pass to get onto the island. Go to the edge of the island to get a photo of the Detroit skyline across the water.
12. The Wright Museum: This is the Museum of African American History. It is very big and has a beautiful glass dome in the middle. The exhibits are very moving. Tickets are $15. Spend at least two hours here to see everything.
13. The Detroit Riverwalk: This is a long path right by the water. You can see Canada across the river! It is free to walk. Walk all the way to the Cullen Plaza and ride the carousel for $3. It has a giant fish instead of a horse!
Where to Sleep
14. Shinola Hotel: This is the fanciest hotel in town. Even if you don’t stay there, go inside to see the giant clock in the lobby. If you stay, it is about $350 a night. It is very posh! Take a photo on the big velvet couches.
15. The Siren Hotel: This hotel is in an old building and looks very “old Hollywood.” It has a pink cafe inside called Candy Bar that is perfect for photos. A room here is about $180 a night. Order a latte at the cafe for $6 and sit in the pink velvet chairs.
Budget vs. Balling Out
I know you like to save money sometimes, but sometimes you want to treat yourself! Here is how the prices look for a day in Detroit:
| Activity | Budget Friendly | Balling Out |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | $8 (Coffee & Pastry at Sister Pie) | $35 (Brunch at San Morello) |
| Lunch | $12 (Two Coney Dogs) | $45 (Fancy Sushi at Noble Fish) |

| Dinner | $22 (Buddy’s Pizza) | $150 (Steak at Prime + Proper) |
