This Is the Best Date to Book Flights for the Lowest Fares—and No, It’s Not Tuesday
OMG bestie!! I am so excited that you are finally planning your next big trip! You have been working way too hard and you totally deserve to lay on a beach or walk through a cool city with a giant ice cream in your hand. I have been doing a ton of research for you because I want you to save as much money as possible. I found out some crazy secrets about when to buy your tickets. Everyone always says you have to buy them on a Tuesday, right? Well, guess what? Everyone is WRONG! I just read the newest data and I have the inside scoop for you. Plus, I’ve put together a giant guide for where you should go next and exactly what you should do to have the best time ever!
The Big Secret: When to Book Your Flight
Okay, listen up because this is going to save you so much cash. You can use that extra money for more tacos or a fancy hat! The newest travel reports say that the best day to book your flight is actually on a Sunday. I know, right?! It sounds crazy. Most people think Sunday is for relaxing or doing laundry, but it is actually the best time to click that “buy” button. If you book on a Sunday instead of a Friday or Monday, you can save up to 15% on your tickets. That is huge!
And here is the other trick. Don’t fly out on a Friday or a Sunday. Everyone does that for weekend trips. If you want the lowest fare, you should plan to fly on a Wednesday. It is the middle of the week, so the planes are not as full. I checked for you, and a flight that costs $400 on a Friday might only cost $280 on a Wednesday. Use that extra $120 to buy a really nice dinner or a cool souvenir!
Where You Are Going: Mexico City!
Since we are talking about saving money and having a blast, you have to go to Mexico City (CDMX). It is one of my favorite places in the whole world. It is not scary at all, it is just big and fun and full of the best food you will ever eat. The weather is almost always perfect, and everything looks amazing for your photos.
What to Eat (This Is the Most Important Part!)
You are going to eat so well on this trip. First, you have to go to a place called El Vilsito. This place is so cool because during the day it is literally a shop where they fix cars. But at night, they close the garage doors and turn it into a taco stand! You need to order the “Gringa.” It is two flour tortillas with melted cheese and “Al Pastor” pork, which is pork cooked on a big spinning spit with a pineapple on top. It is salty and sweet and cheesy. It costs about $3 and it will change your life. Stand right at the counter so you can watch the guy flip the pineapple into the taco with his knife. It is like a magic trick!
Next, you have to go to El Moro for dessert. They have been making churros since 1935! Order a bag of 4 churros and a cup of Mexican chocolate for dipping. The churros are covered in sugar and cinnamon and they are super crunchy. It costs about $4. Go to the one in the “Centro Historico” because the blue and white tiles on the walls look so good in photos. Sit at the little marble tables and dip your churros until they are soaking wet with chocolate. Yum!
Where to Take the Best Photos
I know you want to show everyone how much fun you are having, so you need the best spots.
1. The Blue House (Casa Azul): This is where the famous artist Frida Kahlo lived. Everything is painted a bright, beautiful blue. It looks amazing! Stand in the middle of the garden next to the big green plants. The blue walls make your skin look great. Tickets are exactly $15, and you have to buy them online a week early or you won’t get in!
2. The Sears Cafe View: Go to the Palacio de Bellas Artes. It is a giant white building with a gold and orange roof. It is beautiful, but don’t just stand in front of it. Go across the street to the Sears department store. Go to the 8th floor to the coffee shop called “Finca Don Central.” Buy a latte for $4 and sit on the balcony. You will be looking DOWN at the gold roof of the palace. It is the best view in the whole city!
3. The Umbrella Fountain: Go to the Anthropology Museum. It sounds boring, but it’s not! In the middle of the courtyard, there is a giant stone pillar that holds up a massive roof, and water falls down from it like a huge circular waterfall. Stand right at the edge of the water. It looks like you are in a movie! Entry is only $5.
Comparison Table: Budget vs. Balling Out
I wanted to show you that you can do this trip even if you don’t have a ton of money, or you can go totally wild if you feel like treating yourself!
| Activity | Budget Bestie (Cheap) | Balling Out (Fancy) |
|---|---|---|
| Flight | $250 (Booked on Sunday!) | $800 (First Class/Last Minute) |
| Sleep | $25 (Cool Hostel in Roma) | $450 (The Ritz-Carlton) |
| Breakfast | $2 (Street Tamale & Coffee) | $40 (Fancy Brunch at Lardo) |
| Dinner | $6 (Street Tacos & Soda) | $150 (Tasting menu at Pujol) |
| Transport | $0.25 (The Metro Train) | $60 (Private Driver for the day) |
| Total Per Day | $33.25 | $700.00 |
Don’t Forget the Fun!
You also HAVE to go to a Lucha Libre show. It is Mexican wrestling. It is so loud and crazy! Go to Arena Mexico on a Tuesday or Friday night. Buy a mask from the vendors outside for $5. I like the silver ones! Then, go inside and get a giant cup of popcorn for $3. You will see people jumping off ropes and doing flips. Even if you don’t like sports, you will love this because it is like a big party. Everyone screams and cheers. It is the most fun you can have for $15.
If you want to do something really special, book a hot air balloon ride over the Teotihuacan pyramids. It costs $140, which is a lot, but it is worth it. You have to wake up at 4:00 AM, which is super early, but seeing the sun come up over the ancient stone pyramids while you are floating in the sky is something you will never forget. Wear a thick hoodie because it is really cold up there until the sun gets high!
I am so excited for you to go on this trip. Remember: Book on Sunday, fly on Wednesday, and eat all the tacos you can find! You are going to have the best time ever. I can’t wait to see all your photos!
